On 3 April 2014 I publicly wrote: “Buy Swiss Glasscoat at ₹38.60… I hold the stock.” Today, as HLE Glascoat and adjusted for its 5:1 split, that call is worth roughly 55 times the entry price — and at its 2021 peak, ₹5 lakh invested had become nearly ₹10 crore, a ~200-fold ascent. Here is exactly why I bought a niche engineering company most investors had never heard of.
Glascoat makes glass-lined reactors and equipment — the specialised vessels in which pharmaceutical and specialty-chemical companies run corrosive reactions — plus filtration and drying systems. It is not a household name, but it is India’s number-two player in a market with essentially two serious suppliers. When you sell mission-critical equipment in a near-duopoly to booming pharma and chemical customers, you have real pricing power. That is exactly the kind of quiet, defensible business I look for.
From my ₹38 entry the stock is about 55× today; at its 2021 high the compounding was extraordinary — ₹5 lakh had become ₹10 crore, roughly 200 times. Either way, the lesson is the same. A specialised, near-monopoly supplier to a structurally growing industry gets re-rated relentlessly as its customers expand. I did not need to predict the exact peak; I only needed to own the right business and let the industry’s growth do the rest.
The proof is above: my dated public buy call from 3 April 2014, at ₹38.60, with “I hold the stock” in my own words. I put my name and my capital behind the idea before it was obvious — which is the only time it is still cheap.
“The most powerful businesses are often the ones nobody can see — the quiet suppliers that every growing industry cannot do without.”
Glascoat taught me to hunt for the ‘picks-and-shovels’ — the unglamorous, mission-critical suppliers hiding behind a booming sector. You don’t have to bet on which pharma company wins; you just have to own the company that sells all of them the equipment they cannot operate without.
